Shawn Carter, professionally recognized as Jay-Z, is contesting a lawsuit claiming he and Sean "Diddy" Combs sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in 2000.
A civil action initiated against Combs by Jane Doe in New York's Southern District Court in October was revised and resubmitted on December 8th, adding the rapper and Roc Nation executive as a defendant.
The plaintiff alleges that Combs and Carter committed sexual assault at a private post-VMAs party hosted by Combs. The original suit named an unnamed male celebrity ("Celebrity A") and an unnamed female celebrity ("Celebrity B") as accomplices.
Carter, married to Beyoncé, issued a statement via the Roc Nation X account rejecting the "heinous" and "absurd" accusations. He criticized Doe's Texas attorney, Tony Buzbee, who has filed over 120 lawsuits against Combs, suggesting an attempt at blackmail by sending a "demand letter" before including Carter in the case.
Combs previously denied any wrongdoing via his legal representation.
Buzbee informed the Washington Post that the demand letter his firm sent Carter on behalf of the Alabama resident requested "confidential arbitration," not money.
Carter's attorney, Alex Spiro, has filed a motion seeking the court's denial of Doe's request for anonymity or dismissal of the case.
Yahoo Entertainment obtained Doe's revised complaint, filed December 8th, stating "Combs and Carter took turns assaulting the underage victim," who suspects her drink was tampered with, while "another celebrity observed."
Doe stated that on September 7th, 2000, she tried to attend the VMAs at Radio City Music Hall. The then-13-year-old, lacking a ticket, watched from outside on a large screen.
She spoke with chauffeurs outside, learning about the after-party's location. She claims one, allegedly working for Combs, said "Combs preferred younger girls" and she "matched Diddy's preferences." The driver offered to take her to the party and return.
Upon entering the vehicle, it was an "approximately 20-minute" drive from midtown Manhattan to the party – the exact place is unspecified aside from it being a "large white residence with a gated U-shaped driveway."
At Combs' after-party, Doe claims she was asked to sign what she now believes was a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). She saw "numerous celebrities" and "extensive drug use, including marijuana and cocaine." Doe accepted a drink from a server and immediately felt unwell, needing to lie down in an unoccupied bedroom.
"Shortly afterward, Combs entered, accompanied by defendant Carter and a female celebrity," Doe's complaint reads. She claims Combs approached her aggressively, appearing agitated, and threw her against a wall then onto a bed.
"At that point, Carter started removing [Doe's] clothing as she became increasingly disoriented," the complaint alleges. "[Doe] was held down by Carter as he vaginally raped her, while Combs and Celebrity B watched. After Carter finished...Combs then proceeded to vaginally rape [Doe] while Carter and Celebrity B watched."
Doe claims Combs then tried to force oral sex, but she fought back, striking him in the neck. This allowed her to retrieve her clothing, escape the party, and seek help.
After fleeing, Doe said she found a gas station where a clerk helped her call her father, who picked her up.
The complaint indicates Doe experienced "severe depression" after the assault and "continued effects on every aspect of her life." She has received a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has a seizure disorder resulting from the trauma.
According to Doe's complaint, before amending the suit to include Carter, her lawyers sent a letter "requesting mediation." It claims Carter's lawyers responded by filing a "frivolous lawsuit," alleging a "conspiracy of harassment, bullying and intimidation against [Doe's] lawyers, their families, employees and former associates to silence [Doe]."
Doe's lawyers claim this was meant to "intimidate" her and "discredit her counsel." She refiled the amended lawsuit "due to Carter's egregious behavior."
On December 9th, Carter's attorney Spiro, who successfully dismissed Alec Baldwin's involuntary manslaughter case in July, filed a motion opposing Doe's request for anonymity or dismissal.
The motion stated that for months, an "extortionate campaign" targeted Carter to "demand a massive sum of money"—"millions"—"regardless of the truth." When Carter "refused to pay" and instead anonymously filed a suit on November 18th against Buzbee and his firm for "extortionate actions," Doe's amended suit was filed, making the "clearly false" and "unfounded" allegations public.
According to Carter's filing, this occurred "secretly," and they are "seeking dismissal of the allegations or" for Doe to "refile with her real name."
Carter's lawyer stated Doe's amended complaint shows her case is "not about justice, but a swift, substantial settlement from a celebrity." It further claims Buzbee is behind a "vast extortion scheme" targeting celebrities, wealthy individuals, and businesses connected to Sean Combs.
Here, Carter's lawyer describes him as "an upstanding public figure with no such accusations in his past" and notes the star will "defend himself aggressively and expose the truth: the complaint's allegations are false."
In Carter's Sunday statement, the 24-time Grammy winner denied Doe's "heinous" accusations and accused the "reprehensible" Buzbee of a "blackmail attempt."
He said his "only sorrow" is for his family, as he and Beyoncé must explain the "nature of these claims" to their children amidst the publicity. They will explain "the malice and greed of some people."
Carter said his "heart and support go to genuine victims, who must endure seeing their life stories twisted for profit by this opportunist."
Combs—currently at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., before his 2025 trial on three felony counts of racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution—previously denied Doe's allegations.
"Mr. Combs and his legal team are confident in the facts, their defense, and the judicial process' integrity. In court, the truth will prevail: Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone—adult or minor, man or woman," his lawyers stated in October.
The identity of "Celebrity B" remains undisclosed.
This lawsuit is among over 30 complaints filed against Combs in the last year. Buzbee alone plans to file 120 individual sexual assault lawsuits against the Bad Boy Entertainment founder.
Cuba Gooding Jr. was also named in a sexual assault and harassment suit against Combs by music producer Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones. Jones's allegations against Combs included Gooding sexually harassing and assaulting him on Combs's yacht. Gooding denied these claims.
